Title:
Detection of water and organics in extraterrestrial materials at the nanometer scale
Abstract:
The most primitive and least altered samples from small solar system bodies are also those most likely to preserve the precursor materials from which life evolved. We apply advances in transmission electron microscope instrumentation that now enable spectroscopic analyses on the nanometer scale to detect water and organics in cometary interplanetary dust particles. The simultaneous delivery of water intimately mixed with organics and pulse-heated on atmospheric entry offers an intriguing new perspective on the delivery of prebiotic materials to the Earth and other terrestrial bodies.
